2022 Arkenstone "Estate" Howell Mountain Syrah
98
Decanter
Review Date: 12/2024Planted in 1998 at the Arkenstone Estate, these Syrah vines benefit from a stunning vantage point and are crafted from Clone 877, a robust and reliable Rhône Valley ENTAV selection. Winemaker Sam Kaplan incorporates 6–10% whole cluster fermentation, with the wine aged 22 months in 75% new Remond oak. This is a gorgeous Syrah with dynamic Northern Rhône-inspired aromatics. Perfumed violets and white pepper meld seamlessly with crème de cassis, complemented by a beautiful charcuterie-like quality and nuances of white truffle. The wine is supremely elegant on the palate, featuring seductive, silky, and velvety tannins that are perfectly integrated. The dark black and blueberry fruit offers weighty richness, balanced by a long, mineral-laced finish. Expressive floral notes, hints of sage and thyme, a touch of Indian spices, and an endless length round out this dynamic wine. I landed on the same 98-point score as the 2021 vintage because this is a terrific example of the elegance and complexity Syrah can achieve in the right hands, even in a warm, challenging vintage.
