This is a new project from the Bundschu family of Gundlach Bundschu, a chance to highlight some high-quality fruit from the new Moon Mountain AVA. Toasty in oak and a hint of bacon, it's big, chewy, sanguine and rich in coffee and chocolate, with mountain-proud tannins that add structure and complexity amid the power. (VB)

Containing just a 1% dash of Petite Verdot, the 2013 Due West Nuns Canyon Vineyard presents a deep garnet color and rather earthy / savory nose, with notes of dusty earth, underbrush, leather, dried Mediterranean herbs and beef drippings hints. Showing some evolution on the full-bodied palate, it has velvety tannins and plenty of opulent fruit with some exotic spices coming through on the long, dried mulberry-laced finish. It is drinking well now and should keep for another 6 to 8 years. (LPB)
