Reviewed January 2025The 2022 Estate Red Blend is composed of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot, and 2% Malbec. Most of this was harvested on September 3rd and 5th, before the heatwave that year, with a little coming in on September 14th. Deep garnet-purple colored, it prances out with showy notes of Morello cherries, mulberries, and crushed black currants, slowly revealing wafts of violets, pencil shavings, and rusty nails. The full-bodied palate is bright and vibrant with stacks of red and black fruit flavors, supported by a firm, grainy tannins and well-knit freshness, finishing long and fragrant. Gorgeous! 99+ (LPB)

Arkenstone's 2022 Howell Mountain Estate Red Blend—a Bordeaux-style blend led by Cabernet Sauvignon but with small proportions of Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Merlot and Petit Verdot—features some rather assertive barrel-char scents, plus pine needles, cherries and dusty earth notes. It's full-bodied, rich and approachable but structured, with varied layers of texture. Like some of the other 2022s from Arkenstone, it might finish just a little warm to some palates, but it remains long and remarkably elegant. (JC)
