Bright, red-toned fruit, floral overtones and hints of tobacco all flesh out in the glass, but it is the wine's textural richness and silkiness that elevate the 2016 into the realm of the truly compelling. Racy and super-varietal, the Giuseppe & Luisa is simply a great expression of Russian River Zinfandel. The Giuseppe & Luisa emerges from a parcel planted by Lee Martinelli Sr. with cuttings taken from the original Jackass Hill vineyard his grandparents planted in 1899. (AG)

The 2016 Zinfandel Giuseppe and Luisa is pale to medium garnet-purple in color with a nose of prunes, spice cake and Christmas pudding with touches of sandalwood and mocha. The palate is full-bodied, rich and tantalizingly spicy with firm, chewy tannins and a tart acid line sparking the long finish. (LPB)

Named for the Tuscan immigrants who founded the Martinelli family's Sonoma farming legacy in the 1880s, this Russian River Valley Zinfandel comes from one of the estate's heritage vineyard programs. The 1.5L format is especially apt for a mature Martinelli bottling, where the family name is closely tied to old-vine Zinfandel in western Sonoma County.
