Quite rich, intense and spicy for a Bolgheri rosso, with embers, bark, licorice and ash. Supple and ripe, offering velvety tannins, medium body, crisp acidity and a round finish with savory, floral depth. Drink or hold. (AF)

A blend of 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, 10% Sangiovese, and the remainder Petit Verdot, the 2024 Bolgheri Rosso pours a youthful ruby/purple hue and is highly aromatic, with crushed wildflowers, black raspberry, cherry, orange, and refined herbal spice. Medium- to full-bodied, it’s elegant and light on its feet, with fine tannins, balanced acidity, and a linear, graceful profile with mineral undertones. It combines freshness with depth and finishes with excellent precision and length. Drink 2026-2040. (AF)

The 2024 Bolgheri Rosso is a fine choice for drinking now and over the next handful of years. Bright red/purplish fruit, mint, lavender and mocha all grace this inviting, entry-level offering from Grattamacco. (AG)

Notes

The 2024 Grattamacco Bolgheri Rosso (DOC) is a masterfully balanced, intellectual, and incredibly fresh expression that highlights why this estate remains a pioneering icon of the Tuscan coast. While many Bolgheri reds lean heavily into opulent, over-extracted international styles, Grattamacco takes a distinctively vertical path by preserving a major stake for Sangiovese alongside its foundational blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot. Sourced from certified organic hillside vineyards planted on unique mixtures of calcareous sandstone, marl, and flysch, the wine is fermented in open-top truncated cone oak vats using native yeasts, followed by roughly 10 months of maturation in neutral French oak barriques.
