Vinous

The 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon Lichau Hill Vineyard offers up scents of bay leaf, coffee, dried herbs, gravel and incense. This mid-weight, savory Cabernet Sauvignon exudes old California character. This rocky site in the Petaluma Gap planted at 1,200 feet in elevation yields wines of real distinction. Savory, earthy and structured, the 2023 is a gorgeous wine to savor for the next two decades or more. I loved it. 94+ (AG)

Wine Advocate

The 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon Lichau Hill Vineyard comes from vines planted in 1999 at around 1,000 feet of elevation. Matured for 18 months in 50% new French oak, it has inviting aromas of blackcurrant, blueberry, grilled meats, black pepper, savory herbs and violet. The full-bodied palate is elegantly styled with nuanced, fragrant flavors and seamlessly integrated oak spice. It’s structured by velvety tannins and succulent acidity and has a long finish. It blossoms dramatically with air and will benefit from 3–5 years in the cellar. 142 cases were made.

Notes

Founded by Cody Rasmussen in 2014, Desire Lines Wine Co. is dedicated to small-production, site-driven wines that highlight distinctive California vineyards through restrained, old-school winemaking. Lichau Hill Vineyard is a singular Cabernet Sauvignon site perched at 1,200 feet on the west flank of Sonoma Mountain in the Petaluma Gap, where rocky volcanic soils, constant maritime winds, and a position just above the fog line create a remarkably cool environment for the variety. The combination of this dramatic terroir and Desire Lines' minimalist approach yields a Cabernet Sauvignon of exceptional freshness, structure, and mineral-driven complexity that challenges traditional expectations of California Cabernet.
