2021 Piero Benevelli "Le Coste di Monforte" Barolo

Vinous
Review Date: 01/2025The 2021 Barolo Le Coste di Monforte is the most reticent and searingly tannic of Piero Benevelli's young 2021 Barolos. Iron, white pepper, chalk, incense and dried herbs are all beautifully delineated in the glass. The tannins are fine-grained yet incredibly persistent, with driving tension that extends the bright, saline finish effortlessly. (AG)

Notes
The 2021 Piero Benevelli "Le Coste di Monforte" Barolo (DOCG) is an absolute powerhouse of chiseled, traditionalist precision, showcasing the sensational structural clarity of this reference-caliber vintage. Massimo Benevelli crafts this single-cru monument from his family's choice, south-southeast facing plots within the steep Le Coste amphitheater in Monforte d'Alba. Rooted deeply in the classic Formazioni di Lequio—a compact soil matrix of iron-rich clay marl layered over hard calcareous sandstone—the fruit is spontaneously fermented in stainless steel with a traditional, hands-off 20-to-25-day maceration. The wine is then raised for roughly 24 months strictly in neutral, large Slavonian oak botti. By completely shunning aggressive small-barrel makeup, Massimo preserves the fiercely mineral, vertical drive that makes Monforte legendary.
