Reviewed January 2025
The 2021 Barolo Mosconi is a powerful, tightly wound wine. Then again, this is Mosconi. Dark-toned fruit, iron, incense, licorice, tobacco and dried herbs stain the palate as this young, classically austere Barolo makes itself felt. This really opens beautifully on the finish. Readers will have to give this time. Impressive. (AG)

Notes

The 2021 Piero Benevelli "Mosconi" Barolo (DOCG) is a brooding, deeply structural, and muscular masterpiece that showcases the broader, more powerful side of Monforte d'Alba in this legendary vintage. While Massimo Benevelli's "Le Coste" captures a piercing verticality, his plots in Mosconi—a prestigious cru characterized by a higher concentration of clay intermingled with calcareous Helvetian soils—yield a wine of monumental density and deeper tone. Vinified with traditionalist reverence, the fruit undergoes an extended 25-to-30-day skin maceration before aging for roughly 24 months strictly in large, neutral Slavonian oak botti.
