This wine presents aromas of red berries, accompanied by spices, dried hibiscus, rose petals and a hint of dry stone. It’s medium- to full-bodied with an incisive and pleasant character, featuring precise, focused tannins that recede gracefully towards the finish. The fruit is very focused and linear. Tightly wound yet a joy to taste. While it is already approachable, a year or two will enhance its expression. (JGA)

Rich and laced with ripe cherry, raspberry, pomegranate, floral and mineral flavors, this version is full of tension and dense tannins. There’s plenty of energy driving the long, detailed aftertaste. The superb length indicates this red’s potential. Best from 2029 through 2047. (BS)

Produced since 2019, after a long-term rental contract was secured, this village Barolo is crafted from vines planted in the 1970s in a cool pocket of Serralunga. Ageing is in 25 hectolitre French oak casks rather than smaller barriques which Mauro Veglio has customarily used. It is less overtly expressive than its siblings in the range, but a captivating savouriness pervades throughout. Bay leaf, dark tobacco and wet forest undergrowth emerge slowly but surely. This is midweight with a demure cherry backdrop, pleasant bitter accents, and an irony mineral drive. Long, seductive tannins culminate with an appropriate bite on the finish. Real crunch here. (MM)

The Mauro Veglio 2021 Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d'Alba (with 6,500 bottles made) shows the specific characteristics that are linked to this village. It is powerful, rich and vertical. The delivery is taut and firm, and you get dark fruits with grilled herb and a hint of something rusty or metallic. With 24 months of aging in 25-hectoliter casks, the wine is powerful, pushing from behind with firm, powdery tannins. (ML)

Notes

The 2021 Mauro Veglio "Serralunga d'Alba" Barolo (DOCG) is a masterfully executed, polished, and deeply expressive village wine that brilliantly bridges modern textural precision with the raw structural power of Serralunga in this epic, chiseled vintage. Alessandro Veglio crafts this commune bottling from choice plots rooted in the classic Formazioni di Lequio—a compact matrix of white limestone marls, iron-rich clays, and compressed sandstone. Approached with the estate’s signature focus on refinement, the fruit undergoes a precise, temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel with a maceration of roughly 15 to 20 days. The wine is then aged for 24 months in French oak barrels (predominantly neutral, with a small percentage of new wood). This careful oak regimen beautifully rounds out Serralunga's ferocious edges without masking its underlying mineral identity.
