2021 Mauro Veglio "Serralunga d'Alba" Barolo

James Suckling
Review Date: 01/2025This wine presents aromas of red berries, accompanied by spices, dried hibiscus, rose petals and a hint of dry stone. It’s medium- to full-bodied with an incisive and pleasant character, featuring precise, focused tannins that recede gracefully towards the finish. The fruit is very focused and linear. Tightly wound yet a joy to taste. While it is already approachable, a year or two will enhance its expression. (JGA)

Notes
The 2021 Mauro Veglio "Serralunga d'Alba" Barolo (DOCG) is a masterfully executed, polished, and deeply expressive village wine that brilliantly bridges modern textural precision with the raw structural power of Serralunga in this epic, chiseled vintage. Alessandro Veglio crafts this commune bottling from choice plots rooted in the classic Formazioni di Lequio—a compact matrix of white limestone marls, iron-rich clays, and compressed sandstone. Approached with the estate’s signature focus on refinement, the fruit undergoes a precise, temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel with a maceration of roughly 15 to 20 days. The wine is then aged for 24 months in French oak barrels (predominantly neutral, with a small percentage of new wood). This careful oak regimen beautifully rounds out Serralunga's ferocious edges without masking its underlying mineral identity.
