James Suckling
Reviewed January 2025This wine shows aromas of red berries, sage and tea with eucalyptus undertones. The palate is medium- to full-bodied, with subtle red fruit framed by firm yet refined and polished tannins. The finish is bright and linear, with a pleasant chewiness. Very well crafted and enjoyable already, but better from 2027. (JGA)

Vinous
The 2021 Barolo Gattera is fabulous. Rich and ample in the glass, the Gattera marries the natural richness of this southeast-facing site with the greater transparency that is common in the Veglio Barolos today. The 2021 possesses striking inner sweetness and perfume that blossoms in the mid-palate and expands to fill out all the layers. There's terrific breadth here. (AG)

Wine Advocate
The Mauro Veglio 2021 Barolo Gattera comes from a site in La Morra, and you taste the softness and the delicate nature of this site. This village tends to make the silkiest and sometimes the most accessible expressions of Barolo. This balanced vintage shows pretty floral and fruit nuances and a hint of dusty limestone. A release of 8,500 bottles, Gattera closes with silky tannins. Fruit comes from 70-year-old vines, and what is leftover goes to the Barolo. (ML)

Wine Spectator
Bright cherry, raspberry and savory underbrush flavors are wrapped in a cloak of toasty oak that adds not only vanilla and coconut nuances but also a layer of tannins. In the end, this red feels balanced and long. Best from 2028 through 2045. (BS)
Notes
The 2021 Mauro Veglio "Gattera" Barolo (DOCG) is a remarkably plush, expressive, and masterfully tailored single-cru monument that perfectly showcases La Morra’s capacity for opulent, broad-shouldered generosity without sacrificing the chiseled precision of this historic vintage. Sourced from choice, south-southwest-facing plots wrapped around the iconic cedar tree of Gattera, this site sits on a unique geological boundary where clay-heavy Sant'Agata Marl meets sandy veins.
