Super aromas of fresh violets, black olives, crushed raspberries and blackberries. Hints of dried flowers, too. Full-bodied, yet compact and polished, with superbly crafted tannins that compress the palate, giving it a fine-velvet texture. Tight and focused. Most precise and sophisticated Casalferro ever. This needs at least three or four years to show what it has, but great potential. Best from 2026.

A blend of Merlot grown in three distinct sites in Gaiole in Chianti, with elevations up to 500m above sea level and exposures ranging from south to north, gives Casalferro's new multi-vineyard identity a cool, breezy direction. Like Ricasoli's other top wines, it's vinified in stainless steel and long-aged in tonneaux, 30% new. Blueberry, plum and red and black berry scents mingle with wildflowers, spices and a hint of roasted coffee beans. Stony and sapid in the mouth, it's all about elegance with beautiful cool blue fruits accompanied by a touch of creaminess on the mid-palate, then a long, super-fresh and poised finish. ‘Like a Sangiovese,’ says Francesco Ricasoli proudly. The Barone Ricasoli 2019 Casalferro flaunts its potential in a classic vintage. Made with all Merlot, the wine's DNA is shaped by the variety, but territory also plays a huge role in this presentation. You know you are drinking a wine from Tuscany thanks to a delicate flutter of aromas that includes wild cherry, purple fruits, violet and spice. This wine lends an Italian personality to a French grape. (ML)

The 2019 Casalferro (Merlot) is terrific. Ripe dark cherry/plum fruit, licorice, spice, new leather, menthol and mocha are nicely dialed up in a generous, plush Merlot that offers plenty of Chianti Classico vibrancy. (AG)

The 2019 Barone Ricasoli "Casalferro" Toscana (IGT) is a lavishly textured, deeply muscular, and masterfully tailored Super Tuscan that represents the modern peak of estate expression at Castello di Brolio in Gaiole in Chianti. Francesco Ricasoli crafts this ambitious bottling as a pure, single-vineyard Merlot, completely breaking away from traditional Sangiovese to let an international star interpret Gaiole's rugged terroir. Rooted up to $500$ meters above sea level in a specific, stone-shattered plot rich in decomposed limestone (alberese) and brown clay marl, the fruit is fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats before spending roughly 18 months in French oak barriques (30% new). This technical, small-barrel approach yields an incredibly polished, broad-shouldered architecture.
