So structured and intense, with crushed dark violets, salt, and redolent blue fruits, forest floor. Merk Vineyard is on an old uplifted seafloor in the Carmel Valley appellation. It borrows so much saline freshness and dancing red berries from vines that are only five or six years old.

A new wine for the producer this year, who doesn’t make a lot of Pinot Noir in general the 2024 Pinot Noir Merk Vineyard is an honorable and understandable exception, from calcareous soils. Textural, dusty red berry fruit comes up against herbal sage and tea-infused complexity, the tannins supple but still asking for time. Medium-bodied, it saw 50% whole-cluster fermentation and 14 months on the lees in 20% new oak. The acidity speaks for itself, lingering in fresh, crisp, crunchy salinity. Drink 2028-2034.
