The 2022 The Setting Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon is a masterfully crafted expression of this renowned Napa Valley appellation, aged for 22 months in 90% new French oak. It gradually reveals an intricate aromatic profile, beginning with ripe blackberry, cassis, and dark cocoa before unfolding into layers of crushed violets, pencil lead, and umami-rich earth. The palate is luxuriously textured, offering waves of black plum, espresso, and anise, interwoven with hints of clove and cedar. A vibrant undercurrent of acidity keeps the richness in check, while polished tannins provide a refined structure. As the wine lingers, a vein of crushed rock minerality emerges, adding further depth to the lengthy, resonant finish. While already impressive, this Cabernet Sauvignon will continue to gain nuance and elegance with time in the cellar. Better in 2026. 545 cases produced. Highly recommended.

Wine Advocate

Matured for 22 months in 90% new French oak, the 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville opens slowly on the nose, segueing from blackcurrant and bitter chocolate to blackcurrant bud, graphite, soy sauce and floral perfume. The palate is plush and velvety with layer after layer of spicy, fragrant black fruit. It’s balanced by juicy acidity and has a long, mineral-driven finish. It will benefit from several years in the cellar. 545 cases were made.

Decanter

Winemaker Jesse Katz notes that overhead sprinklers played a crucial role in saving this wine, sourced from two blocks of the Skellenger Vineyard in Oakville. Aged for 22 months in 90% new French oak following stainless-steel fermentation, it shows remarkable freshness despite the challenging heat of the 2022 vintage. The wine captures Oakville’s hallmark coolness with its finely dried and aromatic herbs, redolent of sagebrush and thyme, alongside nuances of tobacco and loamy earth. Medium- to full-bodied, it is framed by superfine tannins with excellent grip, a dusty mineral backbone and a crunchy acid edge. The finish is impressively long and vibrant.

Jeb Dunnuck

A dark red matte color, the 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville is more reserved on the nose and takes its time opening in the glass. From a very hot at this site, it feels more compact, with notes of baked plum, red fig, leather, and dried earth. The palate is grippy and structured, with a blockier feel, and though it might not be the longest lived, it has good grippy tension and gravelly earth notes.
