Winemaker Frédéric Barnier has crafted a superb Clos Saint-Denis again in 2023, with fragrant, forward pomegranate and black cherry fruit aromas with notes of rosemary and peppery spice, violets, and earth. The texture is supple but not lacking grip, and the overall effect is elegant and sophisticated. As in previous years, he has used 30% whole clusters in the ferment, and the ageing is done in large barrels to minimise the influence of the oak. (CC)

Hailing from the historic heart of Clos St-Denis, this is almost Latin in complexity. There are aromatic hints of posh oak with wafts of milk chocolate and vanilla bean extract. The palate oozes with sweet cherries and plums accented by rose petals and graphite. Layered, complex and deserving at least six to seven years of further aging, this will be a treat.

An expressive and supple red, with flavors of pure cherry, raspberry, orange peel, hibiscus and earth. Powerful and embedded with dense tannins yet stays harmonious and elegant from beginning to end. The lasting impression is one of ripe fruit. Best from 2030 through 2047.

Vinified with one-third whole bunches, the 2023 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru (Domaine Gagey) bursts with notes of plums, red berries, orange zest, peonies and spices. Medium to full-bodied, suave and layered, it's supple, seamless and perfumed.
Winemaker Frédéric Barnier and his team have once again delivered a strong portfolio chez Jadot. Barnier stressed the importance of sorting and of vigilance during élevage, in particular where acid rot made an appearance, and he didn't hesitate to perform a saignée for cuvées where yields were high. As I've written before, in the cellar, foudres and 500-liter barrels now complement classic 228-liter pièces, a further evolution adapting to warmer, riper vintages. What's more, barrels are now used four rather than three times, meaning the percentage of new oak overall has fallen. A cold room also helps chill down any fruit that's too warm when it enters the winery, something especially important during the warm 2023 harvest. This vintage also marks the third vintage of organic conversion for the Domaine Louis Jadot and the Domaine Gagey.(WK)
