The 2023 Musigny Grand Cru has a complex bouquet that just needs a few swirls of the glass to reveal its mineral-driven red berry fruit with hints of marmalade and brown spices. This is really nuanced and engaging, though it is more discrete than the previous vintage. The palate is beautifully balanced with fine but firm tannins to frame it, judiciously spiced with touches of leather and earthy notes toward the finish. There is impressive length and depth to this Musigny, though it will of course require four to five years in bottle. Excellent.(NM)

A pale garnet to ruby with elegance more than power on the nose. Discretion. Beautifully balanced, then a fraction firmer on the palate. Maybe just a build-up of tannins, and the stems. Tightens up the finish, so I do not think that we have the full expression of the vineyard on show today.

The king of the cellar is the 2023 Musigny Grand Cru (Domaine Louis Jadot), a deep and layered wine redolent of dark berries, damask roses, exotic spices and blood orange. Deeper-pitched than the Amoureuses, it's full-bodied, velvety and vibrant, with a dense, seamless mid-palate and a long, expansive finish.
Winemaker Frédéric Barnier and his team have once again delivered a strong portfolio chez Jadot. Barnier stressed the importance of sorting and of vigilance during élevage, in particular where acid rot made an appearance, and he didn't hesitate to perform a saignée for cuvées where yields were high. As I've written before, in the cellar, foudres and 500-liter barrels now complement classic 228-liter pièces, a further evolution adapting to warmer, riper vintages. What's more, barrels are now used four rather than three times, meaning the percentage of new oak overall has fallen. A cold room also helps chill down any fruit that's too warm when it enters the winery, something especially important during the warm 2023 harvest. This vintage also marks the third vintage of organic conversion for the Domaine Louis Jadot and the Domaine Gagey.(WK)

Note: from 90+ year old vines in a .32 ha parcel. One again, the floral component is overtly prominent and adds elegance to the cool, airy and highly complex red currant aromas of exotic tea, hoisin, clove, anise and cinnamon. Much like the Amoureuses, the medium weight flavors are super-sleek, if not super-dense, while exuding evident minerality on the superbly long, powerful and equally chiseled finish. This is not only classy but in a class of its own. Most impressive.
