2020 is going to go down as a brilliant year in WA – widespread good, like 2018 – but everyone will remember the firm and plentiful tannins and the fleshy fruit. These go hand in hand in almost every vineyard in the state, and it is so, here. This is very grownup. It has the slick and gloss of beautifully ripe fruit, but it also has the blood, gravel and rust that underpins all reds grown in Frankland River. While this has resolutely earned its 'syrah' moniker, it has enough savoury grunt and brooding chutzpah to accurately reflect the region, too. Bravo. (EL)

95+ points. The 2020 Isolation Ridge Syrah leads with lashings of rose petals and loads of red and purple fruits. It is altogether denser and bigger than the wines that have come before it. But I find this does not come at the expense of the tannins, which are chewy, pliable and substantial. It is chalky and fine but significant, with ferrous grip. The rose petals are laced through the finish as well, and they have a real garden rose, wet-from-the-rain character.

Aromas of wild brambleberries, blackcurrants, raspberries and redcurrants. Some pepper and plenty of spice, too. This is fresh, vivid and strongly primary. The palate has a focused, juicy stance, with fine, powdery tannins cast through red and black berries. Medium-bodied, fleshy and smooth.
