2022 Viña Ijalba Graciano Rioja
92
Tim Atkin
Review Date: 03/2025Drawn from two separate vineyards, in Logroño and Viana, this is a comparatively elegant expression of Graciano that sees just 5% new French and American oak. Aromas of mint, dark chocolate and dried herbs are complemented by sinewy tannins and plum and damson fruit flavours

Notes
Founded in 1991, Viña Ijalba is one of Rioja’s most innovative and environmentally conscious wineries, located just outside the historic city of Logroño. Established by Dionisio Ruiz Ijalba, the estate was built on land that had previously been used as gravel quarries, transforming an abandoned landscape into thriving vineyards. From the beginning, the winery embraced organic farming and has become a pioneer of sustainable viticulture in Rioja. Viña Ijalba is especially known for preserving and championing indigenous grape varieties that had nearly disappeared, including Maturana Tinta, Maturana Blanca, and Graciano. Their vineyards are planted along the banks of the Ebro River, where diverse soils and a continental climate help produce wines of freshness and character. The estate combines traditional Rioja winemaking with a spirit of experimentation, resulting in wines that are both authentic and distinctive. While Tempranillo remains an important part of their portfolio, Viña Ijalba’s variety bottlings have earned international recognition for their uniqueness and sense of place.
