The 2017 Siepi is a total knock-out and one of the best recent vintages I can remember tasting. All the elements simply fall into place. Succulent dark cherry, spice, chocolate, leather and licorice build as the 2017 gains volume in the glass. Sangiovese and Merlot have rarely been so complementary. The 2017 is a gorgeous wine that offers plenty of the richness readers have become accustomed to over the years, but in a slightly less extracted style. (AG)

The polish and finesse to this gorgeous, rich wine is really impressive with a full-bodied, dense and layered palate and a soft, caressingly textured finish. The chocolate, berry and hazelnut character is all integrated beautifully. Give this time to acquire some refinement. Try after 2023 and onwards. (JS)

Siepi is the ultimate proof that you can blend Sangiovese and Merlot without losing your Tuscan soul. The nose has an incredibly playful interplay between the two varieties, Sangiovese and Merlot. The Merlot provides a brooding, savory wave of dark chocolate, crushed blackberry, and roasted earth, but the Sangiovese cuts straight through it with a fiercely high-toned, "crunchy" core of dried blood orange peel, wild mint, and iron. It smells profoundly serious and firmly anchored to the dirt. You might expect a 50/50 blend to sit wide and plush across the mid-palate, but it drives straight down the center with a razor-sharp, vertical spine of acidity. A top Supertuscan offered at 50% off—what more could you ask for?
