Decanter

From the southern Gist Ranch Estate, it’s a west-facing site; this wine sees pump overs to manage the extraction in the Bordeaux varieties. 20 months of elevage, with just 20% new oak. There’s a freshness classic to the mountain style of the Santa Cruz appellation. This wine balances the mountain freshness brilliantly while bringing through the dark, fruity character. Mountain fresh arboreal character, California bay laurel, wild anise and thyme. Purity of taut black fruits, cassis and early season blackberry, finishing with a graphite note and a saline freshness.

James Suckling

Expressive aromas of berries, cherries, minerals, star anise and dried violets. Crushed-rock tannins wrap around ripe flavors of purple plums and black raspberries, while mocha and cigar box hum in the background. Impressive balance of power and structure. Drinkable now, but better in a year or two.

The 2022 Cabernet Franc Estate Grown Gist Ranch is full-bodied and fruity, with a depth of concentration and firm tannins. Grown at high-elevation and ocean-influenced, it has underlying freshness to keep it balanced even in this warm vintage, bringing in the dried herb, forest, and cedar notes of the variety while providing a richness of plummy fruit and cocoa. The oak and tannins are still integrating, so hold a few years and enjoy best 2028-2032.

Wine Advocate

An intense wine marked by the low yields of the vintage, the 2022 Cabernet Franc Gist Ranch opens with a rich, inviting nose of black plums, cocoa powder and dried sage, followed by a suave, saturated and punchy palate. It concludes with a firm, drying and currently introverted finish that will benefit from additional time in the bottle to come together. 92+
