1996 Domaine Michel Noëllat Echezeaux Grand Cru
Notes
Neal Martin of Wine Advocate shares the following: "This must be one of the most connected families in the Côte de Nuits, the genealogical nexus of several famous names. Domaine Georges Noëllat comes from the cousin of the later Michel Noëllat, whilst the connection with Hudelot-Noëllat in Clos Vougeot comes from ancestors further up the family tree. Apart from other ties with Cécile Tremblay and the Confurons, there is another branch on the female side that connects to Ghislaine Barthod (the name was Barthod-Noëllat back in the 1980s)...Sebastien had apprenticed in Nuits Saint Georges at Boisset, plus 3 months working in the United States, before entering the family domaine in 2008, where he works in the vineyard. Sophie studied wine law and tax law and is in charge of the winemaking with other members of the family (her husband in the winemaker at Domaine Sirugue) and the marketing side. They practice lutte raisonée in the 27 hectares of vineyard in the Côte de Nuits, augmented by parcels down in Savigny-lès-Beaune. The average age of the vines is between 60 and 70 years old. Everything here is de-stemmed. Sebastien told me that they do not wish to leave the imprint of the oak on their wines, so they are mostly matured in one-third each of new, one-year-old and two-year-old oak from three cooperages, currently Cavin, François Frères and Taransaud—although Sebastien said that they would reduce it to two from next year."
