Review Date: 11/2021The 2018 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo is quite possibly the most elegant, refined version of this wine I have ever tasted. It does not offer the immediacy or impact of either the 2015 or 2016, but, instead, impresses with its elegance, persistence and total class. Bright floral and spice notes add perfume to a core of red-toned fruit. The 2018 represents another move towards greater finesse at Fontodi. It spent a year in French oak barrel and a second year in cask. (AG)

Notes
Fontodi "Vigna del Sorbo" Chianti Classico Gran Selezione 2018 is a masterful expression of Sangiovese from one of Tuscany’s top producers. Sourced from the Vigna del Sorbo vineyard, one of Fontodi’s premier plots in the Conca d’Oro valley, this wine represents the pinnacle of Chianti Classico, earning the prestigious Gran Selezione designation. The vineyard is planted with old Sangiovese vines, alongside a small portion of Cabernet Sauvignon, and benefits from the ideal combination of calcareous clay soils and perfect sun exposure. The 2018 vintage was marked by a long, moderate growing season, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly, developing intense flavors and excellent balance. The wine is crafted with meticulous attention to detail, undergoing fermentation in stainless steel followed by aging in French oak barriques for 24 months, which enhances its complexity and aging potential. On the nose, the 2018 Vigna del Sorbo reveals an enticing bouquet of dark cherries, blackberries, and plums, layered with aromas of tobacco, cedar, leather, and sweet spices. The palate is powerful yet refined, with rich, concentrated fruit, firm but polished tannins, and vibrant acidity. The integration of the Cabernet Sauvignon adds structure and depth, while maintaining the classic elegance and freshness of Sangiovese. The long, complex finish showcases notes of earth, dried herbs, and a touch of minerality. This is a wine built for long-term aging, but it can also be enjoyed now with deca
