Jeb Dunnuck: "I think the 2005 Château Mouton Rothschild is pure perfection, and is has a ripe, powerful, yet weightless style not far off the 1982. A blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc brought up in new barrels, it’s just now starting to enter its adolescence phase and has sensational notes of ripe black fruits, smoky, scorched earth, pipe tobacco, and chocolate. Massively rich and opulent on the palate, with building yet sweet tannins and no hard edges, it’s one of those wines that needs to be tasted to be believed." (06/2024)

2005 Mouton Rothschild, Pauillac
Quantity: 1
Bottle Size: 750 ml
Provenance: Purchased from a private cellar and maintained in a temperature controlled wine storage facility until picked up by K&L.
60% of the crop made it into this wine. 100% new oak. 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc. Very perfumy nose. Red fruit, cranberry (cranberry flavors, too). This is a rather delicate wine. Mid weight. Nice texture. Lighter colored, with a creamy, silky, velvety mouthfeel. Not huge. Good wine. ** (Clyde Beffa, K&L Bordeaux buyer)

Decanter
“Several bottles of Mouton 2005, from around its 12th birthday to date, have shown it to be more open and expressive than expected. There is immense structure and power in this goliath of a wine, but it is framed by the most intoxicating perfume, reminiscent of the very best vintages of this legendary first growth. The profile is far more rustic and meaty than the purity from its Pauillac peers, yet there is an incredible concentration of sweet, dark fruit as well as perfectly integrated tannins and a long, lingering finish. Exceptional. (GB)” (02/2025)

“This accelerates on the palate with incredibly ripe tannins and finesse. Full body, roasted fruit, leather and grilled meat. Dried flowers, too. It shows superb tannin backbone and polish. Tight and youthful. Just starting to open. Currant and berry undertones with lead pencil are impressive.” (10/2015)

Wine Advocate
“Technical Director and Chief Winemaker Philippe Dhalluin said this was a special year for him, because he considers it his first great vintage—he started in 2004. Deep garnet with hint of brick, the 2005 Mouton Rothschild is evolving into unabashed, flamboyant notes of Christmas cake, plum preserves, chocolate-covered cherries, eucalyptus and crème de cassis with beautifully fragrant wafts of potpourri, incense, Indian spices and cigar box. Full-bodied, the palate performs vinous pirouettes with dazzling exotic spice, floral and earthy nuances, framed by firm, grainy tannins and fantastic freshness, finishing very long and mineral laced. (LPB)” (10/2019)

Wine Spectator
“Gorgeous, with singed alder and juniper notes starting to strut their stuff, while the immense core of steeped red currant, blackberry and plum fruit continues to wait in reserve. A light sanguine thread weaves in on the back end, which is driven by a serious bolt of iron. Shows terrific grip, length and cut. A brick-house Pauillac built for the long haul. (JM)” (05/2017)

Vinous
“The 2005 Mouton Rothschild clearly has a fresher bouquet than the Clerc Milon or Armailhac: copious black fruit, cedar, graphite and violet scents soar from the glass, entrancing with beautiful delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins, quite poised and less ferrous than some of its peers. Mint and veins of dark chocolate are flanked by cracked black pepper towards the bold yet controlled finish. This is drinking supremely well now—a classy Mouton Rothschild that represents the apex of achievement in that decade. (NM)” (06/2025)

“Full ruby-red. Explosive, superripe aromas of black raspberry, currant, graphite and tobacco leaf. Outsized, opulent and generous; this big boy saturates the entire mouth. There's an almost exotic character to the plum and cedar flavors. Spreads out impressively on the back end, coating the palate with ripe tannins. (ST)” (05/2008)

Wine Enthusiast
“If 2005 was a rich year, Mouton reaches the heights of richness. Almost too rich, too New World, but you have to be impressed by the aromatic intensity of the black fruits, the dense, firm tannins, and the super ripe black juice and licorice flavors. The wood is still too overpowering and needs time to settle in. (RV)” (06/2008)
