Though I am not surprised, as the 2011 was magnificent from the outset. What a thrill it is to find it in such great shape today. Layered, aromatic and super-expressive, the 2011 is a wine of tremendous stature. Dark fruit, chocolate, sage and dried flowers all meld into the racy finish. The 2011 is quite simply outrageous. Scarecrow is sourced from the vineyards of the legendary JJ Cohn (think Wizard of Oz) and the name pays tribute to him. The vineyards are equally remarkable and storied. When John Daniel Jr. convinced his neighbor JJ Cohn to plant these vineyards in 1945 he may have known the potential. The vineyards provided fruit for many spectacular wines including the early and magnificent Inglenook Cabernets, and later for many of the iconic Napa Cabs of more modern times. The pre-phylloxera St. George root stock and incredible old vines now produce the fruit for Scarecrow.
