Open and juicy with a plush nature as well as a noticeable ripeness, yet it's only 13% alcohol. Medium- to full-bodied with fine, velvety tannins and a savory, flavorful finish. Juicy and layered. Structured. Plenty of blackberry and blueberry character. A blend of 58% cabernet sauvignon, 36% merlot, 3% cabernet franc and 3% petit verdot.

Ripe cassis, black raspberries, chocolate, spicy and smoky graphite nuances all define the 2025 Le Petit Mouton De Mouton, the second wine of Mouton Rothschild and in the running for the top second wine in the vintage. Based on 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot that's resting in 50% new oak, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a round, layered mouthfeel, ripe, pure, precise tannins, and a great finish. It's one hell of a second wine.

The Wine Palate

Review Date: 04/2026
Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2025 Le Petit Mouton de Mouton Rothschild leaps from the glass with energetic notes of red currant preserves, black raspberries, and freshly crushed black currants, plus hints of pencil shavings, lavender oil, and anise. The medium-bodied palate delivers taut, vibrant black and red berry layers with a grainy texture and bold freshness, finishing long and minerally. The blend is 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot. It has a pH of 3.72 and the alcohol is 13%. It is due to age in French oak barrels for 18 months, 50% new.

Lovely fragrance, raspberry flowers. Creamy, aromatic, expressive. Supple and fleshy at first, the tannins gripping and present in the mouth but the acidity takes over giving this tension and direction. Quite a linear Petit, a more serious and defined one with a wet stone salinity on the fish alongside liquorice and tobacco. Quiet. Has amplitude and breadth at the beginning, really a nice texture to begin with although I think ageing will really help this soften and become more charming. Nice potential. 3% of Petit Verdot completes the blend. 3% Petit Verdot completes the blend. (GH)

The 2025 Petit Mouton shows a surprisingly serious depth and gravitas on the palate, especially for its position in the estate’s hierarchy. The wine opens with rich, dark blackberry, cassis, and plum, layered with subtle hints of spice and graphite. Despite its generosity, it maintains a composed structure, with well-integrated tannins and a bright, energetic acidity that keeps everything lifted and focused. This sense of structure is likely influenced by its sourcing: vineyards situated in the slight dip of land between the Mouton and Carruades plateau, where clay and silt-rich subsoils contribute more plushness and mid-palate density compared to the more gravel-dominant parcels reserved for the grand vin. The result is a wine that feels both serious and approachable: less about overt power, more about controlled depth and precision within a richly layered frame.
