Marilyn Merlot was one of California’s most distinctive cult wine projects, created around the idea of pairing limited-production Napa Valley Merlot with annual label artwork celebrating Marilyn Monroe. Produced in tiny quantities during the early years of Napa’s modern wine renaissance, the wines were sourced from premium Napa Valley vineyards where warm days, cool evenings, and well-drained volcanic and alluvial soils provided ideal conditions for Merlot. While the labels garnered much of the attention, the project was rooted in showcasing the supple texture, dark fruit character, and approachable elegance that helped establish Napa Valley as a world-class region for Bordeaux varieties during the 1970s and 1980s.

Concannon Vineyard in Livermore Valley is one of California’s quiet standard bearers. Founded in 1883 by Irish immigrant James Concannon, it became a home base for Petite Sirah, helping preserve and promote the grape through the 20th century when many others pulled it out. Farming centers on estate vineyards in Livermore’s warm days and cool maritime nights, ideal for ripening structured reds. Concannon famously propagated “Concannon clones,” especially for Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah, selections that spread statewide.² Winemaking leans traditional with stainless fermentation and measured oak aging to keep fruit and structure in balance.

Les Domaines Paul Mas represents the modern evolution of the Languedoc, combining regional scale with disciplined vineyard management. Under Jean-Claude Mas, a fourth-generation vintner, the estate expanded significantly in the early twenty-first century while maintaining a clear focus on varietal expression and consistency. Plantings emphasize Mediterranean varieties. Grenache, Carignan, and Cinsault anchor the reds, while Viognier and Chardonnay lead the whites. Fruit is drawn from both estate holdings and long-term grower partnerships, allowing broad sourcing without sacrificing quality control. Winemaking is direct and technically precise. Stainless steel fermentation, temperature management, and restrained oak usage aim to preserve fruit integrity and regional character.

De La Montanya is a small, family-operated winery in Sonoma County’s Petaluma Gap, established in 1995 by DuMol alum Jay Baker and later shaped by wife Delia Viader’s daughter, Dela Montanya. Leadership has centered on a hands-on approach, with a strong identity tied to both its founders and the namesake winemaker. The estate is shaped by a distinctly cool, wind-influenced environment. Persistent coastal airflow and fog create a long growing season, supporting gradual ripening and naturally balanced structure. This climatic influence is a defining characteristic of the wines. Production is intentionally limited, with a focus on careful vineyard sourcing and minimal intervention in the cellar. Farming practices emphasize sustainability and responsiveness to site conditions. In the winery, techniques are restrained, aiming to preserve vineyard expression rather than impose overt stylistic elements.
