2013 Henschke "Mt. Edelstone" Shiraz Eden Valley South Australia
97
James Halliday
Review Date: 06/2021The 61st vintage, from 101yo ungrafted dry-grown vines, matured for 18 months in 81% French and 19% American hogsheads (34% new). The decision to hold back the release of this shiraz until after the '14 was correct - this is a densely packed wine destined for a long life as vertical tastings have proved again and again, intensity and focus achieved without apparent effort. Medium-bodied, but with compelling black fruits riding on the back of tannins and carefully measured oak.

Notes
Henschke is a renowned, family-owned winery located in the Eden Valley wine region of South Australia. Established in 1868, it is one of Australia's oldest and most respected wineries, now run by the sixth generation of the Henschke family. The winery is especially known for producing premium wines from old-vine, single-vineyard sites, with a strong focus on sustainable viticulture and biodynamic practices. Henschke has gained international acclaim for its flagship wines, particularly Hill of Grace, one of Australia’s most iconic and collectible single-vineyard Shiraz wines, made from vines planted in the 1860s. Another notable wine is the Mount Edelstone Shiraz, produced from a vineyard planted in 1912. making it one of the oldest single-vineyard Shiraz sites in the country. The Mount Edelstone Shiraz is celebrated for its depth, complexity, and age-worthiness, often displaying rich dark fruit, spice, and earthy characters with fine tannins and excellent structure. It stands as a benchmark for cool-climate Australian Shiraz.
