2022 VIK "Milla Cala" Bordeaux Blend Valle de Cachapoal
95
James Suckling
Review Date: 04/2025Warm bread, iodine, graphite, blackberries, cassis and some dark chocolate on the nose. Quite flavorful on the palate, with a medium to full body and masses of tight but small-grained tannins. Very long, tense finish with hints of walnuts and mussels at the end. Goes on and on. 66% cabernet sauvignon, 23% carmenere, 7% syrah and 4% merlot. 20% new oak barrels this year as opposed to the usual 15%. The rest is third-use, with some repurposed, re-toasted barrels. A very good value from VIK. (ZS)

Notes
VIK “Milla Cala” is a flagship wine from VIK Winery, one of Chile's most ambitious and acclaimed wine estates, located in the Millahue Valley of the Cachapoal Valley. The name "Millahue" means "Place of Gold" in the indigenous Mapudungun language and was founded by Norwegian entrepreneur Alexander Vik and his wife Carrie. The estate spans more than 4,000 hectares, with vineyards planted among rolling hills, granitic soils, and diverse microclimates that contribute complexity and balance to the wines. Milla Cala was created as an expression of the estate's terroir and as a bridge between Old World elegance and New World fruit character. The 2022 vintage is composed of 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Carménère, 7% Syrah, and 4% Merlot, showcasing the varieties that thrive in the Millahue Valley. Cabernet Sauvignon provides the backbone of the blend, while Carménère contributes a distinctly Chilean identity.
