Pinhook is finally in California. This small batch brand of bourbon and rye whiskey has been hot back east for a few years now. They got in pretty early and have some pretty significant stocks of good whiskey. The small batches are all named after horses--one of the owners is the business, and might have a real chance at winning the Derby. They've built a strong reputation for putting out super solid and reasonably priced whiskies, each batch bottled and blended individually to create a harmonious product that's designed for drinkers, not collectors. That hasn't stopped many of their small batches from commanding high prices on the secondary market. This batch of Indiana distilled rye is the typical mash bill from MGPI and was dumped and blended in 50 cask batches. The product is processed and proofed at the Castle & Key Distillery as they were one of the first to buy contracts and have a good relationship with the new owners. A ton of work was done to find the optimal blend by tasting and categorizing each barrel in the batch and utilizing a painstaking process of comparison resulting in a whiskey that's greater than the sum of its parts. The resulting whiskey is a soft and round young rye with tons of character, but none of the raw spirit character you might expect at this age. Seamless and distinctive, well priced and attractively packaged, there's no wonder why this brand is sitting squarely in the winner's circle.
