Danjou-Banessy’s 2018 “Clos des Escounils” Côtes du Roussillon Blanc comes from old-vine Macabeu, the quietly noble white of the Catalan borderlands. This parcel, farmed biodynamically on schist and marl, shows why the grape matters here. Macabeu, often relegated to blending in Cava, takes on weight and detail in Roussillon. The wine reads as sun-warmed orchard fruit, fennel, and dried herbs, with a saline lift that keeps it honest. Texture leans waxy yet bright, a reflection of both vine age and the Mediterranean wind.
