2021 Bodegas Muga "Torre Muga" Rioja

Review Date: 03/2026his is a stunning expression of Torre Muga, often described as the most 'modern' of the bodega’s reds. Partnering Tempranillo, 15% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo, it’s an intense, layered, self-assured assemblage that handles its new French oak with ease. Think of it as Rioja meets Cru Classé Bordeaux, with appealing cedarwood, mocha and wild herb aromas, mouth-coating tannins, plenty of cool climate acidity and a core of black cherry, liquorice and bramble. One of the great 2021s.

Notes
Torre Muga was first released in 1991 by Manolo Muga and Isacín Muga, who wanted to produce a Bordeaux style wine from old, low yielding vineyards of Tempranillo, Graciano, and Manuela planted in the village of Villalba de Rioja, the family's hometown. The wine was the first wine produced at Muga that was aged entirely in new French barrique. 75% Tempranillo, 15% Mazuelo, 10% Graciano, the grapes are sorted extensively at the winery and undergo indigenous yeast fermentation in open top oak fermenters. The wine then spends 24 months in French oak, 18 of which are in 225L barriques produced at the winery. The other six months are spent in large oak vats also produced at the winery.
