From a tiny stretch of southern Côte de Beaune that still flies under the radar, Clos Roussot in Maranges delivers a darker, more rustic expression of Pinot that rewards patience. This is premier cru fruit from old limestone slopes just above Sampigny, where the wines lean savory over flashy. 1999 was a structured, classically scaled vintage in Burgundy, built on firm acidity and tannin that aged slowly and steadily. At this stage, expect evolved aromatics of dried cherry, forest floor, leather, and sous-bois, with a touch of iron and game that’s very Maranges. The palate should be resolved but not fragile, still carrying a bit of earthy grip and refreshed by lifted acidity.
