Carl Loewen traces its origins to 1803, when the family purchased former monastery vineyards in the Maximiner Klosterlay during Napoleonic secularization. The estate remains centered on these steep Mosel slate sites, now farmed by Karl Josef Loewen with his son Christopher. Their most famous holding is the Maximin Herrenberg parcel planted in 1896 on original rootstock, regarded as one of the oldest continuously producing Riesling vineyards in the world. Farming is focused on old vines and hand work on slate slopes, with Riesling as the dominant variety. In the cellar they use native yeasts and minimal intervention to preserve site character, continuing a long family tradition shaped over eight generations.
