“The 2018 Pure Magic Beckstoffer To Kalon is a blend of roughly equal parts Cabernet Frand and Cabernet Sauvignon. It is a remarkable wine but, not surprisingly, it is also shut down and far less expressive than the straight To Kalon Cabernet because of the strong Franc component. Lavender, spice, menthol, licorice, mocha and leather are all laced together as this riveting wine opens in the glass. The 2018 is going to need at least a few years to come together, but it is captivating, even in the early going. The Pure Magic is a five barrel blend from the B, D and F blocks, which includes the oldest 337 Clone Cabernet (BlockB) and Clone 6 Cabernet, of which there is very little left (Block D). Medium to full-bodied, the palate struts out a solid frame of exquisitely ripe tannins and bold freshness supporting the multilayered black and red berry flavors, finishing with epic length and an amazing display of mineral fireworks.
