2018 Bedrock Santa Clara County Red Blend Horizontal

Bid on this 5-bottle tasting lot; including 2-bottles of 2018 Bedrock "Dolinsek Ranch Heritage" Russian River Valley Red Blend (97VN), 1-bottle of 2018 Bedrock "Oakville Farmhouse-Heritage Wine" Oakville Red Blend (91VN), and 2-bottles of 2018 Bedrock "Vineyard Under the Mountain - Heritage" Santa Clara County Red Blend (95VN). Of the 2018 Bedrock "Dolinsek Ranch Heritage" Russian River Valley Red Blend, Vinous writes: "The 2018 Dolinsek Heritage Wine shows the darker, more brooding side of the Russian River. Here, Barbera, Syrah, Petite Sirah and Alicante form the heart of the Mixed Blacks that account for about 35% of the blend. Black cherry, plum, lavender, spice, menthol and licorice add to an impression of weight and gravitas in a wine that delivers the goods big time. (AG)" (01/2020)

Morgan Twain-Peterson has made a name for himself and his Bedrock label by seeking out some of northern California's most historic vineyards and creating one-of-a-kind expressions from these often hidden gems. Each wine is a window of sorts into California's earliest winemaking history. The vines themselves have stories to tell and the Bedrock wines are simply the vehicle to tell them. Winemaker's notes: "Every year that we get to farm this vineyard and produce this wine I need to pinch myself. The little 2.5-acre patch of vines dating to the 1930s represents the oldest vineyard left in Oakville. Though surrounded by some bigwigs of the Napa Cabernet scene (Harlan, Promontory, Futo, etc.), this vineyard is composed of a varietal mix that harkens to a different, more diverse time in Napa Valley’s history. Composed of Negrette, Petite Sirah, Mondeuse, Zinfandel, Carignan along with a small amount of Chenin Blanc, Malvasia Bianca, Colombard, Semillon and Muscadelle, this wine somehow still screams of Oakville. Dark fruit, suave tannins, a trademark hit of dark cassis fruit, this makes one of my favorite wines every vintage."

The 2018 Oakville Farmhouse Heritage Wine is quite delicate and refined in this vintage. Cedar, sweet pipe tobacco, dried flowers, mint and sweet red cherry are all nicely lifted. This field blend site will shock readers visiting Napa Valley, but the truth is that most sites in Napa once looked like this. (AG) (01/2020)

One of the many standouts in this range, the Vineyard Under the Mountain Heritage Wine is a blend of 60% Zinfandel and 40% Carignan from a site in Santa Clara County. Bright and punchy, with tons of fruit intensity, the 2018 is a drop-dead gorgeous beauty. It is one of the more overt wines in this range. Sweet red cherry, pomegranate, plum, spice and menthol build into the voluptuous, creamy finish. Racy and so inviting, the 2018 is simply fabulous. (AG) (01/2020)
