Coming from the heart of the estate's vines just across from the main property in the northern part of the appellation, the 2023 Châteauneuf Du Pape Reserve offers incredible aromatics of blackberries, blueberries, scorched earth, black licorice, liquid violets, and ground pepper. The terroir here is similar to the Trois Source release with mostly cooler, sandy soils, and the wine is largely Grenache raised in foudre. Full-bodied on the palate, it has a pure, layered, seamless mouthfeel, flawless balance, building tannins, and a great finish. The power and depth here paired with this balanced elegance is something special, creating a magical wine in the vintage that can be drunk any time over the coming 30-40 years.

Interesting aromas show a crossover of coffee beans and spices. On the palate it has that intense sweet Grenache fruitiness, like strawberry and strawberry coulis. It’s full-bodied for sure - very full-bodied in fact, rich, powerful, with great intensity, but also has impressive acidity running through it. The alcohol is high, it does feel rich - this isn't a bottle to smash between two people. The opposite of glou-glou, it's a wine to take all evening over, because it has incredible length. There are very fine tannins, and plenty of them. A wine of biblical length. It took a year to ferment as the alcohol was so high. Unbelievable sucrosité of Grenache. Selection from Les Trois Sources, their oldest Grenache. Only produced when the Grenache is good enough. (MW)

This is a showstopper. Ripe, with a powerful, dense, beguiling mix of violet, fig paste, bitter cocoa and anise root, all underscored by smoldering cast iron. A plump and sappy style, with earth tones and herbs bringing freshness. Still tightly wound, with sharp black tea tannins yet to unfurl, this is a bruiser of a red that will be fascinating to watch with time. Outstanding. Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. (KB)

The 2023 Réservé from Domaine de la Vieille Julienne unfurls in the glass with aromas of herbs, spices, licorice, gentian and dark wild berries. It’s dense and concentrated with a superb chassis of tannins, a fleshy core of fruit and controlled power that leads to a long, saline and ethereal finish with notes of violet, chocolate and dark cherries. As usual, this cuvée is the highlight of the range and a strong candidate for the title of best wines of the vintage.
