Coming from a slightly higher elevation parcel and based on 65% Grenache, 25% Mourvèdre, and the rest Cinsault and Counoise, the 2023 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Hauts-Lieux offers darker berries, scorched earth, pepper, and sappy garrigue. The slightly cooler terroir as well as the higher Mourvèdre component always gives this a more inward, tight, focused, structured style. It's medium to full-bodied, has beautiful tannins and integrated acidity, and shows a gorgeously balanced, pure profile. It will benefit from 4-6 years of bottle age as one of the longer-lived wines in the vintage.

Massive in scale, yet there’s real nuance and balance to the broad range of fig, fleshy plum and licorice, all underscored by woodsy spices, forest floor leafiness, balsamic reduction and smoke. Brooding and pure, with impressive power and depth. A truly outstanding wine, offering a long life ahead in the cellar. Grenache, Mourvèdre, Counoise and Cinsault. (KB)

The most reductive cuvée in the cellar, the 2023 Les Hauts-Lieux is a beauty, unfurling with aromas of spices, chocolate, dark cherries and garrigue, lifted by alluring notes of licorice. Full-bodied, dense and suave, it is layered and sensual, with polished tannins and a vibrant core of fruit that carries into a perfumed finish. More precise and ethereal than usual, this ranks among the finest renditions I have ever tasted. The blend is composed of 60% Grenache Noir and 20% Mourvèdre. (YC) 96+

This is so rich and ripe, with high alcohol and glycerol. The acidity is surprisingly punchy and really quite intense; there’s some limestone tension, too. The tannins are ripe, huge and structured. Darker and more powerful than the Trois Sources and is likely to be very long lived, but will need 20 years to really show itself. The alcohol is undoubtedly high, but the balance is such that you don’t feel it as much as you might. (MW)

Domaine de la Vieille Julienne is a historic Châteauneuf-du-Pape estate run by Jean-Paul Daumen, whose family has farmed in the region for generations. The domaine farms approximately 20 contiguous hectares in the northern part of the appellation, with vineyards planted primarily over clay and limestone soils mixed with the region’s characteristic galets roulés. The vineyards are farmed organically and biodynamically, with the estate holding Demeter certification. Les Hauts-Lieux comes from a 3.5-hectare parcel at the highest elevation and most sheltered portion of the domaine’s slopes, with vines averaging around 70 years of age. Marl soils and shallow sandy safres covered with quartzite pebbles are particularly well suited to Mourvèdre, which plays an important role alongside Grenache, Cinsault and Counoise.
