Reviewed March 2024Medium garnet-purple in color, the single-varietal 2020 The Patriarch Larner Vineyard Syrah bursts from the glass with notes of fresh juicy blackberries, crunchy black plums, and Indian spices followed by hints of garrigue, cracked black pepper, and underbrush. Full-bodied, opulent, and velvety, the intense black berry layers are beautifully accented with pepper and spice sparks, finishing long and peppery. (LPB)

The 2020 Syrah The Patriarch Larner Vineyard comes from Ballard Canyon and was brought up in 25% new barrels. It's another ripe, sexy, yet also elegant wine from this estate that has lots of darker berry fruits, notes of peppery herbs, leather, and spice, full-bodied richness, a round, silky mouthfeel, and a great finish. It's no shrinking violet at over 15% alcohol, but the balance is spot on, it has beautiful purity, and it should drink well for 7-8 years or more.

The 2020 The Patriarch Syrah Larner Vineyard, vinified with around 20% whole clusters, has a medium to deep ruby-purple color and scents of cassis, thyme and classy wafts of milk chocolate and nutmeg from its maturation in 75% new oak. Full-bodied yet light on its feet, it offers powdery tannins, bursts of refreshing acidity and a long finish with alluring blue fruit. It could use another 2-3 years in bottle or several hours in the decanter. (EB)

The 2020 Syrah The Patriarch is a huge, dense wine. A blast of dark cherry, plum, gravel, spice and incense saturates the palate. There's not much subtlety here, but that does not seem to be the point. Even so, this is an incredibly impressive early effort. (AG)
