Arietta’s On The White Keys sits inside the estate’s long-running Bordeaux-white program, built on hillside Sauvignon Blanc from Sonoma Mountain and old-vine Sémillon from Hyde Vineyard. Founded in 1996 by Fritz and Caren Hatton with John and Maggy Kongsgaard, the winery has always tied its identity to classical music, and this cuvée takes its name from the Arietta theme in Beethoven’s Opus 111. Production follows a clean, mixed-fermentation approach using stainless steel and French oak, with only limited malolactic to preserve acidity. Recent vintages show blends in the 80–87 percent Sauvignon Blanc range, with the balance Sémillon, and case totals typically remain small.

“A relatively powerful (15.5% alcohol) blend of 87% Sauvignon Blanc and 13% Semillon, the 2014 On The White Keys was aged in a combination of new French, neutral French and stainless steel for 12 months prior to bottling. Loads of melony fruit, white currants, quince, and caramelized fig are all present in this beautiful wine, which shows a subtle touch of oak. Powerful and authoritative, this is a beauty... “The 2015 On The White Keys is fresh, vibrant and wonderfully nuanced. It is also remarkably delicate and light on its feet for a vintage that generally produced richer, more unctuous wines. Expressive in its aromatics and brisk in feel, the 2015 offers exceptional balance and class. This is a terrific showing. The 35% new oak is very nicely balanced. In 2015, the Sauvignon Blanc is especially pronounced, while there is only 10% Sémillon in the blend. (AG)” (05/2017)
