A grand cru on the northern side of Gevrey-Chambertin, Mazy-Chambertin is one of the village's classic Chambertin satellites. Domaine Frédéric Esmonin is based in Gevrey and works with family holdings across the Côte de Nuits, with this bottling falling squarely in the domaine's home territory.

Burghound

A discreet application of wood sets off a combination of both red and dark pinot fruit along with sauvage, humus and stone notes. This is unusually concentrated for an Esmonin Mazis with ripe supporting tannins shaping the fleshy and seductively textured medium-bodied flavors that brim with a fine minerality on the impressively well-balanced and persistent finish. This is terrific and given the attractive prices for which the Esmonin wines typically sell, this should be on your buy list as it offers both quality and value, not something that can be said about all grands crus plus it should age well. *Sweet Spot, Outstanding* (01/2013)

Vinous

Good bright red-ruby. Expressive, nuanced nose offers redcurrant, spicy oak, flowers, menthol, licorice and a whiff of game. Sweet and fine-grained, with juicy, intense red fruit flavors picking up notes of licorice and bitter chocolate with air. Not particularly fleshy, in fact a bit youthfully severe today. But finishes primary and fresh, with emerging mineral character. (ST) 92+ (01/2013)
