(98+) Also seeing less time on skins and a shorter maceration, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon checks in as 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Cabernet Franc , with the rest Petit Verdot. Killer notes of blackcurrants, toasted spice, lead pencil, and loamy soil all emerge from this full-bodied beauty. With ripe, building tannins, an expansive, layered, textured, and flat-out stunning purity of fruit, this remarkable mountain Cabernet Sauvignon will benefit from 3-5 years of bottle age and cruise for 30 years or more in cold cellars. 98+

This Pritchard Hill estate makes stupendous wines now, with a subtle, tightly formed nature showing in the tight, linear tannins and blackberry, new-leather and tar character. 1970s style to it. Solid. Drink or hold.

The 2018 Ovid is pretty tightly wound today. In fact, it seems to have closed quite a bit since I last tasted it about a year ago. That won't be an issue in time, but it is something readers should keep in mind. There's terrific depth and resonance, all the 2018 needs is cellaring. (AG) 96+

Packed nicely with dark plum, cassis and raspberry puree flavors, this is vivid and direct, with a graphite edge harnessing the fruit through the finish. There's a strong cast iron spine running from start to finish, giving this some serious depth for the cellar. A late echo of sweet bay leaf adds the finishing touch. Patience required. (JM)

Notes

Antonio Galloni's notes on the producer for Vinous: "The 2018s and 2019s from Ovid are absolutely exquisite. That said, the wines require a major palate re-set, as Winemaker Austin Peterson has implemented a number of changes here in recent years that are just starting to truly make themselves felt in the wines. In the early days, the Ovid wines were typical of a style popular at the time that prized opulence and richness. A few years ago, Peterson began picking the vineyard when sections were ripe, rather than strictly block by block. Harvest dates moved up. Peterson eliminated cold soaks and extended macerations, along with reducing new oak. . . What is clear is that these wines are positively stellar across the board." (12/2020) Winery notes: Ovid Napa Valley is a singular, dynamic and continuous experiment in terroir, nestled at an elevation of 1,500 feet on a secluded mountaintop in the western reaches of Pritchard Hill. Here, iron-rich volcanic soils, abundant sunshine and chaparral flora alchemize to reveal focused, long-lived wines that celebrate their source. Our four estate wines are sourced from our organically farmed fifteen acre vineyard, planted in one-acre blocks with rootstock and clonal combinations of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Syrah.
