Excellent and refined, showing deep, fresh blackberries with tar, dark minerals, cocoa powder and roasted spices. Full-bodied with tight but fine-grained tannins. Lasting well in the finish. (ZS)

95+ points. The current release is the 2021 Pintia, for them an exceptional vintage in Toro, one of their finest to date. It was cropped from a cooler year when the wine has more freshness despite the 15% alcohol, with a pH of 3.83 and 4.7 grams of acidity. It fermented in stainless steel and oak vats and matured partly in stainless steel (15%), barrels and foudres with 75% new oak, for 11 months. Three episodes of rain in September really made the vintage, something unusual in the zone, putting the icing on the cake of a cooler year. The wine is always more powerful than the wines from Ribera or Rioja, with more oomph, density and abundant tannins but with very good balance and freshness. It's a Pintia for the long haul, like a 2018 with more weight. (LG)

This will be released in 2026. There was botrytis in 2021, which is so rare in Toro that one wonders how they recognised it. ‘Three storms, and then botrytis’, says Gonzalo Iturriaga de Juan ruefully. This is a baby at the moment, bottled last year and with a way to go, but with lovely texture and beautiful tannins.

Notes

Located near the town of San Román de Hornija in northwestern Spain, Pintia is the Toro estate of the renowned Spanish wine company Vega Sicilia. Founded in the late 1990s, Pintia was created as an ambitious project to explore the power and character of the Tinta de Toro grape, the local clone of Tempranillo. The winery sits along the Duero River in a harsh continental climate marked by scorching summers, freezing winters, and low rainfall, conditions that naturally produce concentrated grapes with thick skins and intense flavor. Pintia’s vineyards are planted primarily on sandy and stony soils, which help control vigor and contribute to the wine’s structure and minerality. Unlike the more restrained and elegant style often associated with Ribera del Duero, Toro wines are traditionally known for their richness, bold tannins, and high alcohol levels. Pintia has helped modernize the image of Toro by crafting wines that retain the region’s power while also emphasizing balance, freshness, and refinement. The winery carefully manages extraction and aging to create wines with dark fruit flavors, notes of spice, licorice, and cocoa, and a polished texture. Since its founding, Pintia has become one of the flagship producers of Toro and has played a major role in bringing international recognition to the region. Today, Pintia wines are celebrated for combining the intensity of Toro with the precision and elegance associated with the Vega Sicilia name.
