Of the 2020 Domaine Leflaive Mâcon-Verzé "Les Chênes", Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy writes: "From a 3.5ha plot. No stainless steel his used for this cuvée, just concrete tanks and foudres. A fine pale primrose colour. Just a little more precision on the nose, a little more depth of fruit, less of the buttery aspect while still having a lightly salty quality running through the middle. Some elegance here and fair length. Tasted: May 2022."

Domaine Leflaive’s Mâcon-Verzé wines come from the domaine’s Mâconnais holdings, added in the early 2000s to the historic Puligny-Montrachet estate. “Les Chênes” is one of the separate lieu-dit bottlings, distinct from the broader Mâcon-Verzé cuvée and sourced from Chardonnay grown around the village of Verzé.

Domaine Leflaive began its modern era in 1905 when Joseph Leflaive purchased and replanted vineyards in Puligny-Montrachet during the post-phylloxera downturn, then bottled under the family name by the 1920s. His sons formalized the estate in 1973 to keep the holdings intact. Anne-Claude Leflaive took full control in 1994 and completed a full biodynamic conversion in 1997, a shift that helped define the domaine’s identity and influence across Burgundy. The estate farms about twenty-four hectares today, including grands crus such as Montrachet, Chevalier-Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet, and Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet, all dedicated to Chardonnay. Long fermentations in oak followed by élevage in stainless steel maintain a restrained, traditional style.

“A racy white, with a rich texture offset by vivid acidity. Shows green plum, lime and briny seashore aromas and flavors, which are focused and persist on the citrus-infused aftertaste. (BS)” (05/2024)

“A wonderfully fresh and quite spicy nose reflects mostly notes of green apple, lemon rind and a suggestion of petrol. The racy yet rich and nicely concentrated medium weight flavors conclude in a markedly citrusy, clean, dry and sneaky long finale. Fine quality here for what this is.” (06/2023)

“Nicely framed with toasty oak and pastry accents, this rich white exhibits peach, apple tart and grapefruit flavors. An underlying mineral element emerges as this plays out on the finish. (BS)” (09/2024)

“Though opulent, this white features an extra dimension, from its slightly viscous texture to its well-defined flavors of nectarine, honeysuckle and orange peel. A salty tang persists on the finish. (BS)” (02/2026)

“A discreet application of wood sets off slightly riper though still agreeably fresh aromas that are compositionally similar to those of the straight Mâcon-Verzé. There is again good volume to the generously proportioned medium weight flavors that also possess an appealing texture before terminating a lightly stony, bracingly dry and balanced finale that it just a bit firmer. Fine quality for what this is and worth a look.” (06/2025)
