Joe Czerwinski for Wine Advocate on the producer: "Founded in 1984, Harlan Estate is woven into the western hills of Oakville, with 40 planted acres set amid scrub and forests from 325 to 525 feet above sea level. Up a sparsely marked private road, it's an undulating oasis in the hills, with views over the valley from select vantage points. As proprietor Bill Harlan pointed out, one of the unique aspects of Harlan is the team that constitutes the heart of Harlan. Founding director Don Weaver joined in 1986, director of winegrowing Bob Levy, in 1988. Current winemaker Cory Empting was hired in 2001, and the "newcomer" is Will Harlan, Bill's son, who joined full-time in 2012. "That continuity has been a huge thing for us," said Bill, as we caught up on the close to 20 years since we'd last chatted. The vineyards are planted to Cabernet Sauvignon (70%), Merlot (20%), Cabernet Franc (8%) and Petite Verdot (2%), but when asked about the varietal makeup of the 2019 Harlan Estate, Weaver expertly deflected. "We're not trying to express varietal character; we're trying to express a specific place." (03/2023)

“There are roughly 1,000 cases of the 2019 The Maiden, a classy, full-bodied, beautifully textured wine that clearly has some Harlan Estate class and style. Cassis, graphite, integrated oak, and flowers all define the aromatics, and the tannins and purity here are brilliant. It’s a hell of a second wine.” (02/2023)

Wine Advocate
“There are approximately 1000 cases of the 2019 The Maiden, an assemblage of lots that didn't make the final blend for its big sister. Sold only to the mailing list for a third of the price of the Harlan Estate, it's a terrific wine in its own right, with gentle herbal notes accenting mixed red and black cherries. Full-bodied and creamy textured, it finishes lush and long, with hints of mocha creeping in at the end. (JC)” (03/2023)

The Wine Independent
“The 2019 Maiden from Harlan Estate has a deep garnet-purple color. It rolls effortlessly out of the glass with bold notions of blackcurrant jelly, juicy blueberries, and black raspberries, followed by suggestions of rose oil, cloves, dark chocolate, and menthol, plus a hint of garrigue. The full-bodied palate is so beautifully poised with plush tannins and seamless freshness supporting the generous black fruits, finishing long and spicy. (LPB)” (04/2023)

“The 2019 The Maiden is gorgeous. Creamy, ample and expressive, the Maiden is a terrific introduction to the year. Succulent dark cherry, plum, chocolate, spice, leather, menthol fill out the layers beautifully. Medium in body, with gorgeous up-front fruit and radiance. (AG)” (02/2023)
