Wine Enthusiast

This is a really lovely and dynamic wine, starting with dense aromas of cola, root beer, mushroom, mint and black cherry that strike the nose in complex waves. The palate's oregano and marjoram notes give a savory balance to the raspberry and cherry core.

Solomon Hills is the sister property to Bien Nacido, also owned and farmed by the Miller family. This vineyard sits on the opposite side of the Santa Maria Valley from Bien Nacido and is significantly closer to the ocean. The vines grow on rolling hills of ancient sand dunes and are constantly impacted by cold winds and salty ocean fog. Wines from Solomon Hills are always distinctive and wildly aromatic, combining crunchy berry fruits with savory, amaro-like herbs and underbrush. This eye-opening release from Cordant is no different. The wine leaps from the glass with just-ripe dark cherry, pomegranate, sassafras, freshly turned earth, and alpine herbs. Lithe and fresh, with linear acidity and tension running through the somewhat briary fruit. Complex, layered, and a wine that draws you back to the glass time and time again.

Notes

Solomon Hills sits at the western edge of the Santa Maria Valley, one of the appellation's coolest vineyard sites, planted on sandy soils close to the Pacific. Cordant's bottling comes from a site known for slow ripening and a long growing season, making it a natural fit for single-vineyard Pinot Noir.
