2011 Clos Saint Jean Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2011 Clos Saint Jean Châteauneuf-du-Pape ((89-92JD), 91RP, 90ST). Jeb Dunnuck: "A serious effort, the 2011 Clos Saint Jean Châteauneuf-du-Pape is an elegant, complex 2011 that shows a kirsch and raspberry slanted bouquet, with additional notions of olive, garrigue, and black licorice all emerging with air. It is medium-bodied on the palate, has fantastic purity, and a silky, lengthy finish. I do not think it will make old bones, but it will certainly impress for 7-8 years, and given the overall balance and purity of fruit, possibly more." (09/2012)

Here is a great value wine. It displays delicious fruit along with soft tannins, and a big, projected bouquet of crushed herbs, black cherry jam and tobacco. With good acidity as well as medium to full body, it should drink nicely for a decade or more. "Since 2003, when Pascal and Vincent Maurel took over this estate after their father's passing, Clos Saint-Jean has gone from strength to strength," notes Robert Parker. "They have always owned great vineyards, and they had the foresight to hire a brilliant consulting oenologist, Philippe Cambie. The result has been instant stardom, and a succession of world-class wines. Recently they also partnered with the California Central Coast's renowned Manfred Krankl of Sine Qua Non to produce another luxury cuvee of Chateauneuf du Pape from mostly Mourvedre called Chimere. A large estate for Chateauneuf du Pape (over 110 acres), Clos Saint-Jean's history dates back to 1900, with the first Maurel taking control in 1930. The majority of their holdings are in the southeastern sector of the appellation, including significant parcels in La Crau, Les Combes and St-Jean. In top vintages, Clos Saint-Jean produces five cuvees of red Chateauneuf du Pape, and the 2011s are successful across the board." (10/2012)

“The 2011 Chateauneuf du Pape offers gorgeous kirsch and strawberry-styled fruits to go with notions of spring flowers, licorice and rose petal. A perfumed, medium to full-bodied effort, it has loads of charm and class and will have a decade of overall longevity. (JD)” (08/2014)

“Brilliant ruby. Black raspberry, lavender and white pepper on the expressive nose. Juicy and open-knit, offering lively red fruit flavors and a jolt of bracing acidity. Closes silky and sweet, with no obvious tannins and very good fruity persistence. This is already delicious. (JR)” (02/2014)

“Dark brownish crimson. Very spicy nose and lots of concentration. Really big and spicy with masses of alcohol but sufficient freshness too. A little dry on the end. For the long term! 17/20 points. (JR)” (02/2013)
