Review Date: 06/2025Imperial has long been Gramona's banner wine, hardly entry-level but always showing fine quality beneath the celebrated bottlings that sit above it. 50% Xarel-lo, 30% Macabeo, 10% Parellada and 10% Chardonnay offer a hugely vivid, inviting nose of super ripe, juicy grapefruit and roasted almond, with some apricots and brown pastry, all framed with a beautifully charry reductive tilt. What strikes most, here, is the silky delivery on the palate, polished smooth with subtle citric bitterness and cushioned mousse. Exemplary.

Pale lemon colour, with fresh yellow apple, white peach, and meadow grass aromas. Lively mousse, refreshing mouthfeel, peach, citrus, red berries, white pepper, and gentle acidity. Toasty, bright finish.

The 2018 Brut Imperial, from a cooler and wetter year, was produced with 56% Xarel.lo, 30% Macabeo, 10% Parellada and 4% Chardonnay from purchased biodynamic grapes that matured in bottle for 64 months. It was adjusted to six grams of sugar (lower). It was a cooler year with more rain (some mildew) and fresher and younger wines. It has a fine-boned palate, with some residual sugar. (LG)

The 2018 Brut Imperial is a Corpinnat blend of 56% Xarel·lo, 30% Macabeo, 10% Parellada and 4% Chardonnay. Produced using the traditional method, it spent 60 months on the lees. The bouquet features aromas of lime and lemon pie, complemented by a delicate array of fine herbs. Dry and creamy on the palate, the ethereal flow is enlivened by calibrated acidity. Refreshing and joyful, this sparkling wine is a delight. (JH)
