Courtinat is a small, family-run Saint-Pourçain estate rooted in an old 16th-century convent in Saulcet, where Nathalie and Christophe Courtinat have worked the property since 1990. They farm roughly 13–14 hectares of vines in the Saint-Pourçain AOC, producing whites, reds, rosés, and a few sparkling wines, all sold directly from the domaine’s historic buildings, complete with a traditional Bourbonnais pigeonnier. Their range runs from reds made with Gamay and Pinot Noir to local white varieties, all produced in a clean, unfussy style typical of the appellation.

Domaine Jean Teiller began in the 1950s under Léon?Millet, later guided by Jean and Denise Teiller as Menetou-Salon gained recognition. The next transition came in 1986 when Jean-Jacques Teiller and his wife Monique joined, followed in 2003 by their daughter Patricia and her husband Olivier after formal training in Beaune. The estate farms roughly 17–18 hectares across Menetou-Salon, Parassy, Aubinges, and Vignoux-sous-les-Aix, planted to Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. Organic practices began in 2010, with certification in 2017 and biodynamic certification in 2019. Fruit is harvested by hand, fermented largely with indigenous yeasts, and vinified mainly in stainless steel with a small portion aged in barrique.

Very spicy and dripping with rich flavors of dark plum, meat and kirsch. Powerful finish of mineral, smoke and spice. Should go well with roasted lamb. Grenache, Carignane and Syrah. Drink now through 2013. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. (KM) (08/2008)

Château les Quatre Filles is a long-running family estate in Sainte-Cécile-les-Vignes, with documented ownership going back to 1715. The modern chapter began in 1973 under Roger and Nicole Flesia, and since 2003 the estate has been run by their sons Romain and Vincent. The property spans about forty-five hectares and has been fully certified organic under ECOCERT since 2003, a shift the family frames as a philosophical choice rather than a marketing tool. The vineyards sit across Côtes du Rhône, Côtes du Rhône Villages, Rochegude, and Cairanne, with Grenache, Syrah, and very old Carignan forming the core plantings. Most of the production is red wine, and all bottling is done at the estate.

Alain Brumont is one of the stars of Madiran. In 1979 he inherited his father's estate, Château Bouscassé. With little experience in the wine industry, he quickly educated himself and began transforming the landscape of Madiran. Now one of the largest and most important producers in the region, he has four working properties, each distinctive in its own right. Bouscassé represents the most open and polished wine from Alain's holdings. The vines are planted on hillsides with yellow and white clay layered over fissured limestone. Bouscassé is meant to reflect the history of the region, made in the style of the 18th century heyday of Madiran. As of the 2018 vintage, Brumont's stepson Antoine Veiry, who has worked in Bordeaux, Burgundy, Napa and Australia, has joined the winemaking team. This new generational approach shows even more promise for what remains one of the regions most hallowed estates. The Bouscasse is a blend of Tannat, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc from vines ranging from 20 to 100 years old. The wine is matured in barrels with 30 to 50% new oak depending on vintage. It is full of lush black cherry and blackberry fruit with loads of graphite minerality. As always with a Brumont wine, you'll feel the awesome power of Madiran and taste the history of the region in your glass!

The 2018 Château Bouscassé, the first crafted entirely by Antoine Veiry, is a blend of 60% Tannat, 20% Cabernet Franc and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon matured 36 months in 20% new oak barrels. It displays a complex, spicy bouquet with aromas of plum, licorice, black fruits and dark wild berries. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated and layered, the wine tastes like the essence of Madiran with structuring, refined, velvety tannins and a seamless palate. It has a long and generous finish, making it a wine with a remarkable potential for aging (15-20 years and more). (YC) (08/2023)

Wine Enthusiast

This wine, blending Tannat and the two Cabernets, comes from one of the premium Madiran vineyards. It is, of course, young, its dark chocolate aroma and rich, dense black fruits showing a wine with a fine future. Drink this impressive Alain Brumont wine from 2026. (RV) (12/2024)

93

Wine Advocate

The 2019 Château Bouscassé, a blend of 70% Tannat, 25% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon picked at the same time and co-fermented, possesses a perfumed, fresh bouquet of dark wild berries, spices, flowers and mulberries. Medium to full-bodied, polished and fleshy, it’s layered and enveloping with a charming, seamless profile for a Madiran that segues into powdery tannins and a long, mineral finish. It demands some patience. (YC) 93+ (08/2024)

Vinous

The 2019 Château Bouscassé delivers ripe black fruits alongside wood smoke, cloves and licorice. Leafy gradations can be traced back to the addition of Cabernet Franc. Polished tannins lend a gentle structure to this medium-bodied red that’s easygoing and savory. The 2019 spent the first year in barriques (30% new) followed by two years in 80-hectoliter foudres.
