2002 Domaine Comte de Vogüé Musigny Grand Cru Vieilles Vignes

Bid on this bottle of 2002 Domaine Comte de Vogüé Musigny Grand Cru Vieilles Vignes ((97-99RP), 96BH, 96ST, 95JM, 93JG). Wine Advocate: "The extraordinary 2002 Musigny Vieilles Vignes will most likely not have as much cellaring potential as the great 1949, 1959, or 1990, yet qualitatively is in the same league as those jewels from the past. It sports a profound nose of red cherries, spices, candied raspberries, and hints of oak. This noble, concentrated, refined wine reveals loads of flowers intermingled with red as well as black fruits in its complex personality. Unlike the bold, chewy, hyper-concentrated 1990, this is a feminine wine, a work of art with exquisite tannin. (PR)" (06/2004)

Brilliant ruby. Expansive and very open on the nose with a fantastic array of spices, flowers and fruit aromas leading to very serious, exuberantly fresh and impressively deep flavors that also have a wonderfully tactile texture to them. But as it usually is, it's not the raw power that impresses but rather the incredible combination of mind boggling complexity coupled with perfect balance and this just dances across the palate yet stains it with notably ripe pinot extract. The finish is all silk and velvet but with a deeply buried, very firm and chewy backbone of tannins that lasts for minutes. This is greatness in the making. Tasted multiple times with consistent notes. Drink starting 2018. (03/2007)

Good deep red-ruby. Superripe aromas of black raspberry, wild blackberry, blueberry syrup, mocha and licorice. Large-scaled, dense and broad, but more broodingly backward today than the Bonnes-Mares. But this stunning wine shows uncanny energy and sappiness in the mouth and great breadth, solidity and lift on the finish, with explosive flavors of blueberry, blackberry, raspberry and menthol. A hugely dense rich purple colour, very backward. Marvellous rich fruit, with raspberry succulence, very accessible. Gorgeous fruit continues on the palate, without the reticence of which many accuse de Vogüé at the moment. (01/2019)

I was impressed with how the 2002 Comte de Vogüé Musigny was evolving, as I had never loved the wine in its youth. But, at age sixteen, it is starting to come around, though it is still quite primary on both the nose and palate. The bouquet today is a mix of sappy black cherries, gamebird, pomegranate, cocoa, a good base of soil and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and sappy at the core, with good focus and grip, ripe tannins and a long, slightly too new oaky finish. Though the new wood has not quite been integrated fully here on the backend, there is plenty of stuffing to do so eventually and it is not an issue. This is still quite young to be drinking a bottle of Musigny, but I like the direction this is going in right now! 93+ (05/2020)

Very rich, bitter cherry flavours but savoury rather than sweet with masses of fruit still. Great freshness and the bittersweetness grew in the glass. Very long and great immediacy. 18/20 points (JR) (06/2017)
