2013 Ovid "Experiment No. R8.3" Napa Valley Red Blend
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2013 Ovid "Experiment No. R8.3" Napa Valley Red Blend (97DC). Decanter: "This Experiment bottling is a study in the refinement of site selection with one element of control—the rootstock... In the glass, explosive dark fruit aromas, very perfumed with lifted clove and wood smoke notes along with dried roses and violets. Full-bodied, showcasing the epitome of Cabernet power matched by the integrity of a brooding, contemplative wine. Mouthfiilling savoury-sweet cassis and liquorice are tamed by ripe blackberry fruit turning to mixed berry compote and pie crust, framed by elongated, fine-grained tannins with a seamless integration of oak, unfolding in a florality of chaparral and intriguing brown baking spices—just a marvel of wine. (JC)" (12/2022)

Ovid's "Experiment" bottling always changes, as the team at Ovid (you guessed it) experiments with different wines and is inspired by the characteristics of new yield. Producer tasting notes: "At Ovid, one of our original forms of experimentation was the way that we planted our vineyards in 2000. We used four different rootstocks and several grape varietals on each in order to explore how they perform on our little piece of Pritchard Hill in different growing and harvest conditions. The 2013 Experiment R8.3 wine is made from grapes grown predominantly on 3309 rootstock. 3309 is an established rootstock well regarded for its low to moderate vigor and production of smaller berries with more intense fruit flavors. Our 3309 blocks of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc are always the first to ripen—an attribute we appreciate here in Napa Valley where grapes are harvested right up to the first big rains. The 2013 Experiment R8.3 wine is a blend of roughly two-thirds Cabernet Sauvignon and one-third Cabernet Franc, with a splash of Petit Verdot to provide color and bass notes. It is fresh, intense and focused, with notes of red cherries, boysenberry, cocoa, and sandalwood—a wine that speaks with true gusto."

“This Experiment bottling is a study in the refinement of site selection with one element of control—the rootstock. In this case, Rootstock 3309. By harvesting Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, all grafted onto 3309, the winemakers set about vinifying these varieties from separate sections of blocks of vineyards, analysing soil chemistry, picking at different times, and looking for the best kind of roundness and polish of the tannin that the combination of grape and rootstock might provide. In 2013, the Cabernet Sauvignon was harvested on September 16, whilst the Cabernet Franc came off October 3; the conclusions they drew were that earlier harvested Cab Sauv provided more polished tannins, and as a real workhorse Rootstock, 3309 was instrumental in ripening the Cab Sauv during this drought-stricken year.
