2020 Ultramarine "Heintz" & "Hirsch" Vineyards — Sonoma Coast Sparkling Rosé Horizontal Tasting Lot
Bid on this 2-bottle tasting lot; including 1-bottle of 2020 Ultramarine "Heintz Vineyard" Sonoma Coast Rosé Sparkling Wine (91JG) and 1-bottle of 2020 Ultramarine "Hirsch Vineyard" Rosé Sonoma Coast Sparkling Wine. Of the 2020 Ultramarine "Heintz Vineyard" Sonoma Coast Rosé Sparkling Wine. The wine shows some overt reduction on the nose right now, which has to be worked around to get down to the crux of the wine, but once the reduction backs off a bit, the wine offers up a quite lovely bouquet of green apple, lovely, quite salty minerality, dried flowers and an exotic touch of chipotle pepper in the upper register. On the palate the wine is bright, full-bodied and rock solid at the core, with good mineral drive, zesty acids, frothy mousse and good length and grip on the nicely precise finish." (12/2025)

2020 Ultramarine "Heintz Vineyard" Sonoma Coast Rosé Sparkling Wine
Quantity: 1
Bottle Size: 750 ml
Provenance: Original owner. Purchased directly from the winery or retailer on release and stored in a temperature controlled cellar.
One of the most exciting wine projects in California today happens to be an upstart garagiste with an obsession for redefining sparkling wine in America. Michael Cruse operates from a small industrial park in Petaluma just off the bustling Highway 101 corridor. After a brief career in molecular and cell biology laboratories, Cruse worked his first harvest in 2006. After learning about the meticulous, labor-intensive process of producing artisanal grower Champagne, he became convinced that if winemakers applied the same approach to sparkling wine in California, the results could be game-changing. Cruse now stands at the forefront of a burgeoning movement making incredibly beautiful sparkling single-vineyard wines from some of Sonoma's most acclaimed vineyard sites. As William Kelley writes in Decanter, "But by pioneering the artisanal methods and terroir-driven philosophy of the grower Champagne movement here in North America, it’s fair to say he’s enjoying an influence that’s being felt far beyond his modest facility in Petaluma."

“The 2020 Ultramarine “Heintz Vineyard” Rosé from Cruse Wine Company is still a very young wine, but I really like its potential and feel it will be a fine drink once it has blossomed. On the palate the wine is bright, full-bodied and rock solid at the core, with good mineral drive, zesty acids, frothy mousse and good length and grip on the nicely precise finish. I do not know what the wine’s dosage is in this vintage, but it has not yet quite integrated fully into the body of the wine and a bit of time in the cellar is going to be required for the wine to snap into balance, but this has good constituent components and is going to be a very good wine in a few years. I have seen comments elsewhere calling this wine vegetal, but that is just the reductive elements, which I assume are going to blow off with bottle age, as they are not all that strident. 91+” (12/2025)
